V-ROD FRP Rebars

INTRODUCTION

V-ROD FRP rebars have been manufactured by Pultrall since 1987.

 

FRP Rebars are made of glass fibers and resin. The glass-fibers provides the stiffness properties to the bars, while the vinyl ester or polyester resin provides the corrosion resistance property for extreme use in chemical or alkaline environments. FRP bars significantly increases the longevity of civil engineering structures where corrosion is an important factor.

 

Steel rebars are subject to corrosion which in turn causes rapid structural failure. FRP rebars do not rust even when exposed to the harshest conditions. V•ROD FRP rebars can offer more than 3 times the tensile strength and is also 4 times lighter than the traditional steel rebars making it much easier to handle; and significantly reducing the installation & transportation time and costs.

Structural FRP Rebars

For structural applications, FRP rebars are made with vinyl ester resin. In foundation walls, the vertical bars are carrying all the stresses while the horizontal bars are carrying lower or no stresses. In this case, the vertical bars should be V-ROD Viny, while V-ROD Poly bars can be used as horizontal reinforcement.

Non-Structural FRP Rebars

The use of V-ROD Poly FRP bar for flatwork and concrete slab on grade has been rapidly expanding due its corrosion resistance and superior crack control. V-ROD Ploy is used for non-structural elements such as flatwork, slab-on-grade, or other elements where stresses are negligible.

PROJECTS

 

V•ROD® FRP rebars were selected due to non-corrosive, non-conductive properties and excellent durability characteristics. FRP rebars were used, for a total of 5,47,620 meters. In total, the project required the use of 20 containers for a total of 500 tones of V-ROD FRP rebars (18 weeks; 1.1 containers/week).

 

Qatalum Aluminum Plant 2007​

V-ROD® FRP Rebar was used to reinforce up to 19 m long FRP cages (diameters of 600 mm – 920 mm). 

Highest grade 60 GPa 32 m vertical rebars used with (16 m) 50 GPa continuous spirals with 150 mm pitch and inside 16 m circular ties at 600 mm. Trancels-Pultrall supplied V-ROD® FRP rebar in the North Tunnels portion of the TTC $2.6 billion subway expansion project.

Cable stayed bridge supported on match cast precast three tower center pier and 225 thick precast deck panels reinforced with V-ROD FRP Rebar on total of 480 precast panels. Overall deck length was 827 feet (252 meters) and was mix of GI and GIII bar. Quantity of V-ROD FRP rebar used was approximately 4,63,000 meters, i.e., total 210 tons. FRP rebar was delivered in 10 weeks; 21 tons of FRP rebar per week.

The V•ROD FRP reinforcement rod is the ultimate alternative to steel because it is totally unaffected by chloride ions & compatible with all other materials. Allows for reduced concrete cover over the reinforcing and eliminated the need for additives. Total 19 flat beds were deliverd over a period of 9 weeks (2 flatbed/week; 20 tons/flatbed ; 40 tons/week).
